Winter has hit us quite severely for early December.....
Temperatures will remain very low with London & the South east possibly seeing some snow tomorrow !!!
So much for Global warning !!!!

We stayed in Thetford a couple of years ago... wanted a dog friendly pub to stay in around that area and for access to the Broads (we hired a boat)... the only thing I found in Thetford was the Forest... the Desert Rats museum... and a shit load of Pig farms... think the next nearest pub to us was about 10 miles away... anyway lovely neck of the woods

Bringing back this thread because of the mention of Oxford.
The idea of a '20min neighbourhood' is currently being fought by the residents of Thetford In Norfolk.

Oxford has a decent bus service.
It needs to.
It has a large population in the city centre , that don't drive but require a large service industry. The workers in that service industry cannot live in the city centre but because it is filled with students.
Speaking of Endeavor and the like. My mother-in-law RIP got upset once when we showed her an episode of Lewis and said "see that murder scene, under the bridge. We walk through there every day." Don't think see couldn't tell fact from fiction, just that I was subjecting her daughter to walks through places that could be murder scenes.

There could be an argument for forcing a local authority to provide a viable (for the users) alternative before whacking up traffic restrictions (everywhere).
I seem to recall that villages on the outskirts of Cologne found a workable way of allowing trams - but nothing else mechanically driven - through the their winding, narrow high streets along which two cars would have difficulty passing without "touching paint".
There are solutions to the travel demands of a/any population, but they need to be rolled out in advance at society level (and probably "loss making" for many years), before dumping restrictions on hitherto taken for granted freedoms.
A carrot, rather than a stick, approach. Probably never happen because the wrong sort of people would be making money out of such schemes.

goose, it seems like it will restrict lazy people and make them consider how important their drive into town is no? Oxford centre is a tourist attraction with a shopping centre…..a lot like London on a smaller scale yet most of us are more than willing to jump on a tube….

Above a certain distance most ppl only travel by car, so it restricts movement let’s say.
Too far to walk and too painful getting public transport.
And of course reducing the number of cars on the road is about climate change.

Not travelling.
It restricts travelling by private cars certain ways. Like a one way street or a congestion charge.
Not sure you know the area. Two of those I would consider major routes and they either have a lot of side streets around (St Clements) or have a ring road not that much out of the way either direction (Marston Ferry)
Annoying - yes.
Waste of fuel - yes.
Might not work - yes.
Traps anyone/ lockdown - no
Anything to do with climate change - no

I’ve not read all of it but BRISTOL has had traffic ‘gates’ for some time now which basically means only buses and taxis can drive in the city centre. You go through a gate and get a fine. I think it’s claimed to reduce emissions but the reality is local authorities are skint and it raises a lot of revenue. Expect more of this in every city and town

It’s 6 new routes.
6 major (for oxford) routes.
It’s aimed at stopping people travelling. For two thirds of the year.

To drive a certain way, not in certain parts.
The St. Cross location is right beside the English/Law faculty, where I spent a lot of time when I first moved there. Across and down the street, in a fellowship house, lived an American professor and family we became friends with.
Under this system, the most direct route out of Oxford, going north, would be restricted if they were using their private car. Not all routes, just the most direct one. Would make him drive more but would not trap him. Not counting the 100 days where he could apply to go the direct way.
A lot of palaver, which is what Oxford planners do but it's nothing to do with climate and not a lock down.

They already have this on George and Cornmarket Streets in Oxford. High Street is restricted most of the time, enforced by those same cameras that will be used in the new trials.
Of course, it's restrictive, in the way one way streets are restrictive.

How do the traffic filter permits work?
Residents in Oxford and some areas just outside the city will be able to apply for a permit allowing them to drive through the traffic filters for up to 100 days per year. Every resident in the Oxford permit area will be eligible for one permit to drive through the filters 100 days a year.
Sounds like they’re only allowed to drive in certain parts for 100 days in a year to me.

They aren't.
The article is dead wrong on a number of things. There is nothing that prevents you from driving at any time except going certain ways into central Oxford. There are other ways to get where you are going.
Again, it might not work, it might be a huge waste and it certainly tries to restrict movement if you consider a congestion charge a restriction of movement. But I care about journalism and the article you shared is bad journalism.
